The Atlantia Class was one of the largest classes of her day, and a rather unique design. Two large flight decks are positioned one on either side of the main hull, providing flight support capabilities for smaller craft unparalleled by most other classes to this day, only recently matched by the more recent Shield Class Shuttle Carriers. However, while excellent in its primary activity as a carrier, the Atlantia Class did suffer in other areas. The size of the ships in this class made maintaining high speeds difficult, limiting their effective range. This lead to the eventual development of the smaller Courage Class to perform similar duties, until new engine technology allowed for larger ships such as the Shield Class.
The Atlantia Class does have an unfortunate reputation as a cursed class. Of the eight ships constructed for this class, six have met untimely ends due to mishap or hostile action. A seventh, the U.S.S. Pegasus, disappeared under mysterious circumstances and remains missing to this day with no explanation. Only the U.S.S. Galactica has escaped this curse.
This last ship of this class was refitted to modern technological standards in the mid 2280's. While still somewhat underpowered in engine performance compared to other classes, the Galactica is now able to maintain a cruising velocity of Warp 7.2 for extended periods.
While officially operating out of Yotsuya's Shipyard, the Galactica has been sent on a long term mission expected to be generational in nature. Accompanied by a small fleet containing two Larson Class Colony Transports and a number of smaller support ships, this fleet is on a mission to explore beyond known space and into the Delta Quadrant. At last word, the mission was proceeding smoothly with a number of new worlds discovered and earmarked for future exploration by followup missions.

Behind the Scenes Notes:
This ship is, of course, a homage to the titular ship of the television series Battlestar Galactica, and the design of it is an attempt to take the design of the Galactica and re-imagine it through the prism of a Starfleet design philosophy.
The names of the eight ships in this class are taken from the eight named Battlestars from the original 70's version of Battlestar Galactica. The fact that the U.S.S. Pegasus is missing rather then confirmed as lost is in homage to that Battlestar's unconfirmed fate in the original television program.
