After the Tomobiki Class provided the Federation with a degree of expansion unheard of since early days, this provided the Constitution and Freedom Classes with a vast frontier to explore. It was an exciting time, but it did leave Starfleet a bit thin of Cruiser-type ships within the heart of the Federation. A new class of ship was designed to help pick up this slack.
The Sidney Class Cruiser is very similar to the Constitution Class, but being designed to operate more within the heart of Federation territory Sidney Class ships have much simpler weapon systems. This makes the Sidney Class simpler to construct, and also frees up a small amount of interior space for additional scientific and diplomatic facilities.
The Sidney Class underwent a major refit in the mid 2270's, after the success of a similar refit to the Constitution Class.
