While the Saladin and Manhattan Classes continue to serve Starfleet quite well, some in the Starfleet Corps of Engineers were eager to see a new Destroyer designed with modern technology in mind as opposed to an older ship class refitted to modern standards. The result of this was the Pike Class.
The Pike Class Destroyer represents a bold new design choice for Starfleet. The entire ship was designed to be no taller then a standard primary hull. It is hoped that this will provide a tactical advantage by presenting as small a target as possible in combat situations. Indeed, the finished ship presents a very small profile from edge-on.
This was a bit of a challenge to the design crew, who had to figure out how to include at least the minimum expected offensive capability into a frame even more compact then is usual for a Destroyer Class design. One space saving suggestion was a new hull structure that placed a trio of photon torpedo launch tubes directly below the bridge. As this design was being proposed around the same time that the remaining Valkyrie Class Destroyers were undergoing refits, it was decided to first test it on those ships. When it proved successful, the new torpedo bay design was approved for inclusion on the Pike Class.
Although still early in their operational life, thus far the Pike Class has proven most formidable in helping to defuse potential hostilities, or in taking care of such hostilities should they prove unavoidable.
