It was a long road to Starfleet's development of a new class of frigates. First came the Indefatigable Class, which, while a good ship, was not enough of an improvement over the existing Miranda Class to justify its high construction costs. Next came the Northampton Class, an attempt to design a smaller frigate that would supplement rather than replace Starfleet's existing frigates. This time the results were quite well received, except that the single-nacelle design proved to offer less then satisfactory performance at warp speeds. Back to the drawing board once again, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers took the hull designed for the Northampton Class and, after some slight modification and the addition of a second warp nacelle, the Clarke Class was born.
This class has been a huge success, able to be outfitted for and excellently perform a multitude of mission profiles, freeing up the more versatile Miranda Class frigates for other missions befitting the use of a larger class.
