After the initial failure of the Karkinos Class, some of the design work was salvaged by incorporating a slightly condensed version of the secondary hull design developed as a part of that program into a more traditional overall hull design. The result was the Tomobiki Class, a hugely successful design that proved to be the backbone of the Federation Starfleet prior to the introduction of the Constitution Class.

Tomobiki Class ships served far and wide, expanding the boundaries of the Federation by far and making more new discoveries then any class of ship prior. This illustrious legacy came at a cost, unfortunately, as many of the ships in this class were lost in the line of duty. The few that remain today were almost decommissioned in 2273, but after the success with the refit program to bring the Constitution Class up to modern standards, the last of the Tomobiki Class were given a stay of execution and similarly upgraded. Thus, even if not the backbone they once were, they continue to contribute to scientific and exploratory pursuits.
