There has been some debate about the Miranda Class. No one argues the success of the class, but some feel that, even with their operational lives having been extended through refits, the time has come to begin work on a replacement class. The Indefatigable Class was an attempt to design a new vessel that could take on the role of the Miranda Class, and do it even better.
The result was an excellent vessel, but ultimately after the initial construction order of six ships was completed it was decided not to move forward with this class. What improvements it has to offer over the capabilities of the Miranda Class, while considerable in some areas, are at most marginal during average use.
In the end, with so many Miranda Class ships still in operation, it was not deemed materials efficient to decommission them in favor of a new class. Instead, in order to help boost fleet strength it was decided to explore designs of a smaller sized frigate class to work along side the Miranda Class. This would eventually lead to the development of the Northampton Class.
